Kiddos in the kitchen.

Inviting children to participate in selecting, preparing and plating food is a valuable investment in their health. Lifelong habits begin when we empower and educated children -as young as two even!- on good food choices and the life skill of cooking. In order to help them celebrate and succeed in the kitchen, providing them with age appropriate tasks and tools is key:

Age 2-3:

  • washing produce - a wooden brush for cleaning nails works well for their smaller hands to clean veggies and fruits.

  • picking herb leaves off stems

  • pouring and mixing ingredients into mixing bowls and gentle stirring with adult hands guiding as needed.

  • mashing and kneading

  • squeezing lemons and citrus

Age 4-5:

  • building on 2-3 skills

  • setting the table

  • washing and tearing lettuces, kale.

  • cracking eggs

  • “saw cutting” with nylon knife

Age 6-7:

  • building on 2-5 skills

  • peeling softer produce and potatoes with adult supervision

  • using measuring spoons and cups for detailed measurements

  • pouring liquids

Age 8-10:

  • building on 2-8 skills

  • creating recipes

  • using mixer and blender with adult supervision

  • building sandwiches and salads independently

  • chopping, cutting, and dicing with age appropriate knives and practice
